Persian Rug Washing

Home - Persian Rug History

Persia, the ancient name for Iran, is one of the most prolific producers of handmade rugs.  The quality, variety and originality of Persian Rugs require expert rug washing to avoid bleeding colors, tearing, thinning or possibility ruining your treasure.

Your persian rugs and oriental carpets are not just art treasures, they are also very valuable investments.  That why such care in cleaning and attention to detail are so important.   An oriental (persian) carpet, when it first comes off the loom, has a very raw and crude appearance and it is universally agreed that before it can be sold in the West it needs a 'polish'.

Below is an outline providing a little
rug washing information from
our oriental rug cleaning specialists.

Twenty or thirty years of use in an Eastern home will do the trick:  there, all the loose hairs in the wool will gradually come out and the gentle traffic of feet without shoes in a room with little or no furniture will cause the fibres to begin to glow with a natural lustre (that same sheen which is frowned upon when it develops in a businessman's suite!).  However, the same effect can be achieved by a process of washing.  Many techniques are used in different countries, from simply dipping the carpet in a Persian brook and hanging it in the sun to dry, to complex chemical processing carried out in modern factories in Europe or the USA.
