Picture Designs
Strong pictorial elements may be noted in several
categories of design illustrated in the
preceding pages, from willow trees and nightingales to vases and mosques.
But although the borderline between a real picture and one which simple
contains representational elements is ill-defined, very few of them, such as
this one
could be called fully fledged pictures. The Chinese pile rug in
"tapestry" style shown here does look like it could be a photograph,
Of course, the finer the weaver the easier it is to
produce pictorial effect. In fact, however, picture rugs tend to be
dependent on fineness of stitch but more on local tradition. The
representation of human or other figures in art is forbidden to Muslims -
not in the Koran, as sometimes asserted, but in the hadith, the
sayings attributed to the Prophet.
In this piece, Majnn throws himself on Layla's tomb,
Indian miniature paining illustrating a mid-fifteenth-century romance;
this is a typical example
of the secular representational art that flourished at the court of the
Sunni Mogul emperors.
